Most conventional means of locating mold in homes is accomplished by air sampling analysis. This is done by taking an indoor sample of the air (usually 150 liters) and an outdoor air sample just outside of the home (also 150 liters). The samples are taken to the laboratory for analysis. If the spore count of a given species of mold in the indoor species exceeds the outdoor spore count of the same species by at least 10 times, then it is generally considered that the mold spores were produced indoors from a colonized mold source. The problem is, many times the colonized mold source is not visible and may be hidden behind walls, ceilings or under carpet or flooring. In order to properly remediate (remove) the mold growth from within the home, the mold colony must be located. In the past this has been done by an "educated guess" or by picking out the most logical location and opening it up. If you guessed wrong, you had to continue to search until the source was located. This could become a costly venture to locating the source of mold colonization in the home.
By utilizing a dog trained to "scent search" mold, the exact location of the mold can be determined usually within a matter of a few minutes, eliminating the need to open walls, ceilings, and floors to locate the mold source and saving the homeowner a lot of time and money in the process. We are so confident that our mold sniffing dog will locate the mold sources in your home, that there is no fee for the service if she can't.
Abby is a six year old AKC registered Jack Russell Terrier who has been specially trained to "sniff" out mold using the same training techniques used to train dogs for drug, cadaver and explosive sniffing. Like most dogs, her sense of smell is 15 times greater that most humans and is capable of recognizing the scent of table salt and quinine in a dilution of 1:10,000,000, compounds which for most people are totally without scent.
and a half originating in England in the nineteenth century when parson John (Jack) Russell bred a small terrier designed to bolt small game (particularly fox) from their lairs. They are small, compact and flexible dogs, and have the energy and stamina to follow hounds and horses for miles across hilly terrain. They are also highly intelligent, very courageous, and extremely tenacious in seeking out their quarry. Jack Russell Terriers have been used by various K-9 handlers in a variety of search applications because of their tenacity. When given an objective to seek out, the JRT is seldom distracted and will not lose interest until it has reached its objective. Because of the inbred qualities and characteristics of the JRT, Abby is a perfect for sniffing out mold colonies, much like her ancestors were trained to sniff out foxes and flush them from their lairs. |
